Seeing red
Article Abstract:
The King of Malaysia's warm reception of General Than Shwe, the head of Burma's State Law and Order Restoration Council, (Slorc) sparked a wave of protest. Twenty-nine nongovernmental Malaysian organizations objected on the basis of Slorc's poor human rights record and mistreatment of Muslims. In the past, Malaysia has strongly criticized the Burman regime and opposed Muslim oppression in Bosnia and Chechnya. The government position is that "constructive engagement" can produce change. A Malaysian human rights activist thinks economics is driving the about-face.

A site to behold
Article Abstract:
Malaysian art dealer Valentine Willie is seeking to attract overseas purchasers as the domestic art market continues to weaken. He set up a Web site detailing more than 300 Southeast Asian paintings in 1995, and in early Aug 1998 launched an improved version of this site. The site now receives up to around 200 hits a day, and Internet enquiries account for almost a quarter of Willie's business. He believes that Internet marketing is effective.
