Seoul threatens appeal to WTO in chip dispute with U.S
Article Abstract:
South Korean Trade Minister Lim Chang Yuei has asked US Sec of Commerce William Daley to end antidumping tariff penalties against South Korean companies Hyundai Electronic Industries Company Ltd and LG Semicon Co. The minister claimed that the US move violated provisions in the World Trade Organization's (WTO) antidumping law. WTO code requires its members to suspend antidumping charges on their exporters if found innocent of unfair pricing for five years. The US Commerce Dept had ruled against South Korean exports of dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) chips in 1993.

U.S., EU researchers join to develop superchip tool
Article Abstract:
European and US researchers have reportedly agreed to join their efforts for the development of a new technology which could revolutionize the production of semiconductor chips. Called ion-projection lithography, the new technology will supposedly make it possible for new-generation gigabit chips to be produced because of its ability to work with structures as small as 0.1 or 0.2 microns wide. The consortium is hoping that ion-projection lithography will allow the US and European semiconductor industries to break Japan's dominance of the market.
