Globalization has affected the retail industry and this is reflects in a number of bids such as Wal-Mart's bid to acquire Asda. Ahold from the Netherlands has acquired supermarkets in Poland. Carrefour has set up stores in the Czech Republic, Indonesia, Colombia and Chile, and plans expansion into Japan. Promodes from France has moved into a leading position in Argentina. Opportunities shrink as this trend continues, but there are obstacles such as cultural differences between markets.
