Show stoppers: Malaysia's new TV networks hit turbulence
Article Abstract:
Malaysia's new pay-TV services are having technical problems, so they have quietly entered the market to avoid high expectations from viewers. MegaTV has faced transmission and installation problems, while MetroVision has experienced technical and programming difficulties. Major problems for MegaTV also include a shortage of personnel and equipment. MetroVision has had some difficulty attracting advertisers, so it probably will not meet its first six-month revenue goals. These troubles are expected to subside as the stations become more efficient.

Friend or foe? Australian media rivals team up on racing broadcasts
Article Abstract:
Australian media magnates Kerry Packer and Rupert Murdoch are collaborating on getting the broadcast rights to racing in Australia, despite their famed rivalry. The pair, who already have joint projects in a lottery and two printing operations, want to expand their coverage of harness-, horse-, and dog-racing. Murdoch's News Corp bought 50% of SkyChannel, owned by Packer's Publishing & Broadcasting Ltd; it hopes to bring interactive gambling to the Asia market. The two apparently anticipate huge returns on this investment.

Anyone for doubles? Sports channels debate whether to play together
Article Abstract:
US-based cable tv giant Telcommunications Inc and News Corp's StarTV are reexamining their ties through TCI's Prime International and News Corp's StarTV. The talks could lead to a media merger with huge implications for broadcasting in Asia. One key element is Asian Sports Channel, which is not yet on the air but counts TCI as one partner and has strong political ties in India, Malaysia, and New Zealand. If a merger does not result, developments could create more competition for broadcast rights and viewers.
