Shunned
Article Abstract:
Myanmar has joined the Association of South-East Asian Nations (ASEAN) but its rulers still face exclusion from certain circles. The US has refused to take part in a conference on heroin in Maynmar on the grounds that the country produces drugs and shelters drug barons. The European Union has imposed a number of sanctions on Myanmar. Limited aid is provided by the United Nations, China and Japan, but more aid would be provided if there were a democratic government.

Never mind the quality: ASEAN
Article Abstract:
Cambodia, Laos, and Myanmar are hoping to join the Assn of South East Asian Nations in Jul 1997, and apparently the present members will welcome them. The membership of Myanmar, in particular, is somewhat troubling to US and European governments who object to that nation's military regime.
