Singapore takes bold steps to cool speculation in property market
Article Abstract:
The Singaporean government has formulated several measures aimed at curbing speculation in the country's real estate market. The measures include a ban on Singapore dollar borrowing for foreigners purchasing residential property, tighter credit requirements for mortgages and new taxes to discourage selling of residential property within three years of purchase. Singaporean Deputy Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong stressed that the new measures are not intended to curtail the real estate industry but, rather, to control unwarranted speculation which has boosted property prices four-fold since 1990.
