Some experts suggest Asian convertible bonds as alternative to region's risky equity markets

Some investment experts believe that Asian convertible bonds could be an attractive option in view of their currently-low prices. They state that convertible bonds have the advantage of downside protection since they can be converted at a fixed price into the shares of the issuing company. Many experts are now recommending convertible bond issues in the Hong Kong hotel sector in view of their high level of equity participation and large yields.

Improving credit ratings will provide boost to Asian bond markets, experts say

Investment experts generally agree that better credit ratings would do much to boost investor confidence in Asia's emerging bond markets. They state that the credit ratings for borrowers such as the Philippines, Indonesia and Singapore should be upgraded in view of recent developments. However, they also warn investors against proceeding without caution as Asian bond markets can hold many pitfalls for the unwary.

Second-line bond market may offer first-line value

Security analysts believe that the secondary bond market in Asia offers investors the chance to buy at bargain prices and reap high yields at the same time. There are an estimated $4.4 billion convertible bond issues or Eurobonds that is expected to become available starting the middle of 1996. Among the companies set to issue such bonds are Hong Kong's Paliburg Holdings and Samsung Display Devices of Korea.
