Singapore worries about the neighbors
Article Abstract:
Singapore worries more about the environments of political uncertainty among its neighboring countries than its economic future. It has escaped relatively unscathed from the economic crisis that has been gripping the East Asian region since 1997 due to its strong institutions and sound macroeconomic management. The issue that concerns Singapore is the political instability of countries such as Indonesia and Malaysia which are inhabited by a combined total of 230 million and are geographically surrounding Singapore, a country of only 4 million residents.

Surging economies in East Asia have room for further long-term growth, study says
Article Abstract:
A study prepared by the Australian National University's Asia-Pacific Economics Group contends that the East Asian economic boom is a long-term phenomenon and that the region has much potential for further economic growth. The region's economies again outperformed the rest of the world in 1995 and they are expected to do the same in 1996. The study sharply contrasts with the view of some economists that the Asian economic miracle will not last.

Despite Western Hubris, traditional Asian values didn't
Article Abstract:
Rapid modernization and mismanagement of policies are key factors which contributed to East Asia's worst financial crisis ever. As governments dashed to adopt modernization, financial institutions lagged behind which caused disastrous financial consequences. Western experts believe that the region must be able to adopt democratic capitalism in order to recuperate from such a debacle.
