Sizing up the new times
Article Abstract:
Architectural practice BDP is one of the largest in the country, holding 2% of national construction turnover, but even an operation of this size has been forced to adapt to new market conditions, according to Richard Saxon, new company chairman of the London office. It has divided up conceptual and executive functions and reduced the size of the teams working on a particular job. Its main areas of activity are office, retail and public buildings, but it is also moving into areas such as leisure and transport. Saxon's career is also discussed.

Back to the classroom
Article Abstract:
Don Clark is estates director of Lancaster University and is presiding over new building projects where value for money is of prime importance. Clark warns architects that they must be prepared to compete and to communicate effectively if they are to benefit from the current boom in educational construction. Universities are planning to increase student numbers and to provide more flexible buildings. Clark, a quantity surveyor, insists that architects give accurate costings and can communicate with non-professionals.

Adding value to education
Article Abstract:
A report for the Royal Institute of British Architects reviews current and future funding and trends in training for architects. The report, produced by a committee under chairman Richard Burton, makes 45 separate recommendations. It is strongly in favour of maintaining five year funding for students that the government had wanted reduced to four. It also wants greater specialisation for Part II of degrees and better links between architecture and other courses with greater emphasis on business and language training.
