Small talk
Article Abstract:
The second Asia-Europe Meeting, held in Singapore on Feb 15, 1997, brought together 25 foreign ministers from Asia and Europe. It proved difficult to reach agreement on sensitive issues, and the only real achievement of the meeting was the inauguration of the Asia-Europe Foundation. Foreign ministers were not able to reach agreement on guidelines for political dialogue within the new organisation, and it is not yet clear whether new members will be admitted during the Asia-Europe summit in London, England, in 1998.

Do not disturb: oil-rich Brunei shows little inclination to diversity
Article Abstract:
Brunei's economy remains heavily dependent on oil and gas revenues and income from invested foreign reserves, despite an effort to encourage private enterprise. Strong tax incentives and the lack of tariffs have drawn garment makers and others, but high local wages mean they often must import workers. Telecommunications and shipping are expensive, and a maddening bureaucracy makes paperwork a chore. Nevertheless, without entrepreneurship, the country may never develop economically as have its neighbors.
