Article Abstract:
The UK market for sports footwear is expected to rise in value to 1,200 million pounds sterling in 2002 from 1,050 million pound sterling in 1998. Around 21% of all spending on footwear was spent on sports footwear in 1997. The dominant sports footwear manufacturers are Nike, Reebok and adidas which account for almost 50% of the market. About 20 million pounds sterling was spent by the footwear companies on advertising their products in the UK during 1997-1998. Sales on sportswear goods, clothing and shoes have risen by almost 50% during 1992-1998 to a value of 3,470 million pounds sterling.

In 1994, the market for consumer sports equipment was valued at 495 million pounds sterling, with 540 million pounds forecast for 1995. Around 82% of the total is accounted for by sportswear, including leisurewear; with the remaining 18% made up by equipment. The largest sector is accounted for by golf, followed by fitness equipment and outdoor sports.
