Still living dangerously
Article Abstract:
Indonesia is moving toward democracy, after having been hit by the Asian economic crisis. Indonesia was one of the worst hit countries, and had also been hit by cronyism. Riots followed rising unemployment and prices, and President Suharto eventually resigned. Abdurrahman Wahid became president after elections in 1999, and aims to prise the military away from government. He has selected a civilian for the post of defense minister. He has to tread cautiously because of the risk of a coup if change is too rapid.

Living together
Article Abstract:
There are closer economic links between southeast Asia and China, Japan and South Korea, though there is no certainty that a single market will develop. There have been calls for Japan to act as though it were the International Monetary Fund in the region, an idea that the US initially opposed, though a revised version of the project may prove acceptable. There are some divisions such as a dispute over the Spratley Islands, which China is laying claim to, as well as a number of other countries in the region.
