Stockley Park updated: Arup Associations has succeeded in designing its latest Stockley Park building, 3 The Square, to be as attractive as the development's earlier buildings, while responding to current concerns about low energy use and improved working environments
Article Abstract:
Arup Associations designed the latest Stockley Park office building which had to have the attractive aspects of earlier Stockley buildings, whilst responding to current energy use concerns. The building is of cruciform shape placed within a square glass envelope, creating conservatory spaces around the perimeter. The building is clad in maple veneered panels with the outer rainscreen glazed elements set in welded steel angle frameworks. Internally the air conditioning is based on a plenum floor supply system, and cross ventilation is encouraged by the use of opening low level vents. Cost analysis and working details are provided.

Future perfect air-conditioning: speculative buildings pose extra problems for low-energy design. Arup Associates' offices at Stockley Park suggest ideas for 2010 and beyond
Article Abstract:
The competition to provide a building which addressed the issues of energy efficiency, deep space and opening windows, whilst satisfying preferences for full air conditioning was wone by Arup Associates. The design aimed to minimise running costs whilst incorporating a mixe-mode operation, involving mechanical and natural ventilation. The full air condtioning uses a plenum-floor supply system and traditional sash windows allow natural ventilation.
