Strategic options in re-engineering of a manufacturing system with uncertain completion time
Article Abstract:
Strategic options in the reengineering of a manufacturing system have been investigated with reference to real world applications. An optimal stopping model was utilized to formulate the strategic engineering option problem to maximize expected total profit. Results show that the optimal policy for the strategic engineering option problem is either a bang-band control or a two-band control, depending on the nature of the value build-up process. The solution for an optimal option policy leads to a second-order free-boundary problem which generally yields no closed-form analytical solutions. The managerial implications of an optimal policy for the strategic engineering option problem were discussed.

Multicriteria models for the allocation of design parameter targets
Article Abstract:
The allocation of design parameters for either minimizing the deviation of performance measures from predetermined nominal values or placing performance measure means well within tolerance ranges was examined using multicriteria models. The effectiveness and flexibility of the proposed procedures were evaluated through empirical comparisons with existing models. In addition, the models were used to consider problems where the performance measures are second degree polynomial functions and linear functions of the design parameters.

Design of electronic assembly lines: an analytical framework and its application
Article Abstract:
The relevant issues pertaining to the system design of electronic assembly lines in printed circuit board manufacturing environments were examined using a mathematical programming model. The proposed algorithm considers the operational trade-offs associated with the principal design components of such assembly lines, namely, mini-line, flexible flow line and hybrid line designs. A set of managerial guidelines for choosing the appropriate design for electronic assembly lines is presented.
