Straws in the wind
Article Abstract:
The Republican presidential campaign in Ames, Iowa, involves nine candidates of a total of 10, who are seeking votes in an opinion poll in Iowa. The event does not function as an effective forecast for the winner. Iowa is atypical in that there is a high voter turnout and a higher than average proportion of whites among voters. The poll also serves to raise funds, as well as attracting the media. The poll could show challenge to George W. Bush, and this could be significant if an opponent performs well.

Fatherland, blatherland
Article Abstract:
Fatherland-All Russia is an alliance between different Russian political personalities, including Yevgeny Primakov, a former prime minister, which looked set to perform well. The members of this alliance are neither reformers, nor from the political left. Opinion polls have shown a drop in support for the alliance. Fatherland still benefits from a strong network of connections at regional level, but this may not be sufficient for the alliance to perform well in Russia's elections.
