Stuttgart digs deep for cathedral for the train
Article Abstract:
Ingenhoven Overdiek Kahlan und Partner, Frei Otto, and Buro Happold with Leonhardt Andra und Partner, are to take forward their prize-winning competition entry to redevelop Stuttgart Railway Station in Germany. The team proposed to preserve the Schlossgarten Central Park by situating the infrastructure of the station below ground. The existing cul-de-sac station will be transformed into a running-through station to accommodate the Euro-trains. The sculptural concrete shell will form the roof and columns, featuring glazed 'bull' eyes in the roof.

Controlling the unknown for towering achievement
Article Abstract:
The project for the new air traffic control tower at the East Midlands Airport, comprised a tower shaft, a visual-control room, a sub-cab and the base building. Construction options considered included precast concrete, jump-forming and slip-forming. Slip forming was chosen as the quickest approach but required meticulous planning. Vertical grooves were incorporated into the perimeter of the shaft to lessen potential visual defects in the concrete finish.

Nervi's mastery of art in reinforced concrete. (Concrete Quarterly)
Article Abstract:
Pier Luigi Nervi, an engineer, born in Sondrino in 1891, believed that intuition was just as important to the structural engineer as to the artist. Nervi worked with the most advanced technology of the time and his success as a designer started with the construction of the Municipal Stadium in Florence, the design of which responded to contemporary tastes. Concrete was coated with fine cement to achieve a high quality finish.
