Thomson-CSF changes name to Thales

Thomson-CSF has changed its name to Thales in an effort to be recognized as a European leader and global front-runner in professional electronics for defense, aerospace as well as information technology and services. Following its purchase of Racal Electronics Proprietary Ltd in 1999, the company employs 65,000 workers around the world of whom 50% are headquartered outside of France. Thales generated revenues of 8.2 billion Euros in 1999, 70% of which were from worldwide sales.

Subs introduced to command and weapons control system
Article Abstract:
Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace has launched the MSI-90U Mk 2 command and weapons control system for submarines. The system was derived from the MSI-90U system made for the Royal Norwegian Navy and the German Navy. The MSI-90U Mk 2 is based on commercial off-the-shelf technology (COTS), including the MFC-2000M compact multifunction console. It features UltraSPARC processors and NEC-made 20.1-in active matric thin film transistor color liquid crystal displays with backlight. The system's software are also COTS, and includes POSIX, Open GL and X-Windows.
