Suez Lyonnaise is set to buy Nalco Chemical; water-treatment concern will make French firm leader in the industry

Suez Lyonnaise des Eaux has agreed to buy Nalco Chemical Co for US$4.1 billion, or $53/share. The price offered is 24% higher than the closing price of Nalco stock on June 25, 1999. If Suez Lyonnaise completes the transaction, it will become the leading provider of water treatment services globally, surpassing Vivendi S.A. Nalco has more than 45,000 industrial customers in 120 countries, and reported 1998 profits of $37.9 million on revenues of $1.57 billion. Suez Lyonnaise would assume $406 million in Nalco debts as part of the transaction.
