Sugar daddy: businessman emerges as pillar of the regime
Article Abstract:
The power wielded by Theng Bunma, Cambodia's richest businessman, comes from his connections to the country's military and political leaders, which were developed by bankrolling the military budget, giving gifts to leaders, and paying more taxes than any other Cambodian. According to a biography published in a Phnom Penh newspaper, Bunma had bribed a guard and escaped from prison in 1972 after being convicted of smuggling opium in from Thailand. His subsequent success with smuggling made him a rich man. Bunman says his fortune came from the Thai property boom in the 1980s.
