Support an Australian republic
Article Abstract:
Australians could vote to remain part of a monarchy in the 1999 referendum despite the fact that polls reveal a majority in favour of Australia becoming a republic. The reason for this situation is that the convention which voted for the establishment of a republic also decided on a republican model in which the head of state would be a parliamentary appointment. Australians want to elect their head of state, and polls indicate that they might opt for monarchy in preference to appointed presidents. A solution to this problem could include use of a two-part question in the referendum.

ASEAN's unkept promise: 1993 pledge on human rights seems to have been forgotten
Article Abstract:
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) does not appear committed to the pledge regarding establishing a regional human rights commission it made at the World Conference on Human Rights in Vienna in 1993. Indonesia has set up a national commission, but most ASEAN nations appear to have intended to do little more than use the pledge to receive favorable press. Non-governmental organizations in the region are pushing for national human rights commissions, but no official efforts are evident.
