Wizard of Oz: Australia's Evans redraws the map of Asia
Article Abstract:
Foreign Minister Gareth Evans of Australia tried at the July, 1995, Asean meeting in Brunei to convince his counterparts that Australia is part of East Asia, without evident success. His immediate goal was invitations for Australia and New Zealand to the first Asia-Europe Economic Meeting, slated for next year in Bangkok. He pointed out Australia's ties to Asean countries in terms of defense, education, and immigration, not to mention trade, with two-way commerce rising 20% annually for the past decade. Malaysia led the denial, although it has reportedly agreed that Australia and New Zealand should be included in the second summit meeting.

Tangle-free: Singapore's traffic schemes are the talk of Asia
Article Abstract:
Singapore's two decades of effort to minimize traffic problems have led to sky-high car ownership prices but little gridlock and widespread use of an efficient public transit system. The government has long had a quota system and special fees for entering parts of the city during business hours. It plans a new system for automatically deducting charges via special readers mounted in vehicles. Only 31% of Singapore households now have a car, and 70% of work-related trips are on public transit, including the S$500 million subway system.

Death in custody: government poised to probe police over killing
Article Abstract:
Malaysian attorney-general Datuk Mohtar Abdullah is proceeding cautiously after a judicial inquiry identified 11 policemen criminally responsible for a suspect's death while in custody. The police, four of them senior officers, remain on the job pending a decision to prosecute. On Apr 27, 1995, two months after thieves tunneled into a bank vault and stole millions of dollars, the police detained Lee Quat Leong, 42. On May 13, they told his wife he was dead. Four police investigations found nothing, but a higher inquiry succeeded.
