Sydney prepares precision runway monitor to go operational
Article Abstract:
Airservices anticipates the Precision Runway Monitor (PRM) at the Sydney, Australia, Kingsford Smith airport to be fully operational in 1999. The PRM, from AlliedSignal, was deployed at around the time the parallel runway and control tower was set up. However, certification problems in the US have stopped it from being operational. Due to the parallel runways' close proximity with one another, a PRM is needed before planes can perform an independent instrument landing system approaches (ILS) in instrument meteorological conditions (IMC).

International support for precision approach trials
Article Abstract:
The US, Europe and Japan are developing different satellite signal augmentation systems for aircraft navigation and precision landing but are working to develop common standards to ensure interoperability. A series of trials is being conducted over Iceland by the US Federal Aviation Administration and the UK Defense Evaluation and Research Agency to ascertain whether an aircraft can navigate and carry out precision landing using signals from both the US wide-area augmentation system and the Northern European Satellite Testbed.
