TOO MUCH STATIC ON THE MOBILE LINE
Article Abstract:
About 16.69 percent (93,834) of the cellphone subscribers have not used their mobile phone since they bought. Another 206,360, or 37.1 percent, have restricted their cellphone bills to Rs500 a month, one-fifth of the estimates of the industry. The cellphone industry has accumulated losses of Rs2,005 crore in the past 2 years. In 1996-97, the industry's loss was Rs637 crore and in 1997-98, Rs1,368 crore. The industry wants the Government of India to extend the licence period from 10 years to 15 years and give a 2- year moratorium on the licence fee payment from March 1998 to March 2000. Of the 22 cellular operators of India, Bharti Cellular was the only company to earn a profit of Rs2.5 crore in 1997-98. It has accumulated losses of Rs39 crore. The industry has made an investment of Rs8,000 crore and most of it has been licence fees. Birla AT & T has paid Rs313.80 crore as licence fee against its turnover of Rs28.22 crore. JT Mobile has paid a licence fee of Rs217 crore while its income was Rs55 crore. The subscriber base for the cellphones has been much less than the estimates. Birla AT & T had expected a subscriber base of 81,200 by March 1998 but it got 43,398 subscribers. (rk)

METROS STILL RULE CELL SUBSCRIBER BASE
Article Abstract:
The four metros account for over 60 percent with 550,000 cellular subscribers out of the 880,000 subscribers in India at present while 330,000 subscribers are located in the 18 telecom circles. The number of subscribers in the metros decreased to 551,757 in March 1998 from 556,226 in February 1998. The number of subscribers in the rest of the country increased to 330,532 in March from 306,923 in February. The decline in the number of subscribers in the metros is because operators are disconnecting the connections of defaulters. Another reason for the decline is due to the fact that the Income Tax department is asking cellular subscribers to file their returns. (khr)
