TWO-THREE WHEELERS--WHERE DO WE SCOOT?
Article Abstract:
The two-wheeler market is witnessing an uptrend. The sales of two- wheelers increased by 12 percent for the nine-month period ended December 1998. There was a growth of 4 percent in scooter sales, 8 percent in mopeds and 24 percent in motorcycles. The two wheeler industry is threatened by the low priced small car segment and the second hand car market. The improved models with advanced technologies have an edge over the outdated models within the industry. The demand is for vehicles with power, mileage, special features like electric start and trendy looks. The five-geared motorcycle, the four stroke scooters and the stylish, lightweight scooterettes will challenge the existing models. Mopeds lose their market to scooters and scooterettes due to lack of storage space for goods, lack of financing options and their non-suitability to women. The moped market has gone down from 21.31 percent of the total sale in two wheeler segment in 1997-98 to 18.16 percent in 1998-99. The market for scooters has grown from 41.28 percent in 1997-98 to 44.13 percent in 1998-99 and the motorcycles segment was more or less the same at 37.71 (37.21 percent in 1997-98) in 1998-99.
