Thai prince makes provocative movies
Article Abstract:
Chatri Chalerm Yukol, aside from being a royal prince of Thailand, is also renowned among Thais as Tan Mui, one of the country's ablest motion picture directors and producers. Tan Mui began making films in the late 1960s after he succeeded his mother as director of Pronmitr Productions, a film production company owned by his family. He has made a series of films characterized by a fearless scrutiny of social issues. 'Salween,' his latest and most popular film, depicts lawlessness along the Thai-Burmese border. Tan Mui attributes his films' success to their realism and Asian content.

Ties that bind
Article Abstract:
Burgeoning trade and transportation infrastructure in Laos threaten to reconfigure Southeast Asia's balance of economic and political power, to Vietnam's conternation. Thailand remains Laos largest trading partner by far, but Chinese influence is growing quickly. Vietnam is particularly concerned about China's evident military interest in Laos, to which the Chinese government has given 1,600 tons of military hardware since 1993, with more to come. Laos is more stable than Burma, China's other route to the region.
