Thailand awaits major telephone concession
Article Abstract:
Political factors will determine much of the short-term course of Thailand's telecommunications infrastructure. TelecomAsia and Thai Telephone and Telecommunications had expected to divvy up the private-sector portion of a planned contract to install 1.9 million new fixed phone lines, but the old government never got to it. Thaksin Shinawatra, a prominent member of the new government and head of the Palang Dharma Party, also runs the Shinawatra Group, a competing firm. Analysts think that might delay the awarding of the contract.

Merger madness: Thai firms team up to tackle the competition
Article Abstract:
A new alliance between Central and Robinson offers a challenge to Charoen Pokphand Group's burgeoning retail business while three media companies unite to defend against CP's incursions in their telecommunications turf. The Robinson-Central merger will create Rainbow Global Holding, controlling 55% of Robinson and 100% of Central's owner; Central will dominate the alliance. Markets and analysts alike welcomed the moves in increasingly competitive industries, but CP - Thailand's biggest conglomerate - seems up to the challenge.

28-year itch: insurance spat highlights larger U.S.-Thai trade issues
Article Abstract:
A dispute between Thailand and the US over a US-owned insurance company's expansion plans illustrates the growing tension between the two countries over trade issues. Thailand's trade is increasingly shifting toward other Asean members, while the US share remains steady. The spat arose from Universal Insurance's desire to stablish full branch offices. A US-Thailand treaty lets wholly US-owned companies operate like thai-owned ones, but many Thais want to change that treaty, a move the US opposes.
