Thailand: right signal in strong baht

Thailand is showing signs of steadily recovering from the Asian financial crisis with the implementation of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) rescue package. Although Thailand still suffers from contractions, there is increased optimism that the worst aspects of the recession are over. Prime Minister Chuan Leekpai's government is credited with getting support from US business and the Clinton Administration, and Leekpai is enjoying popular support for his programs.

A bridge of hope for Mekong Delta
Article Abstract:
The My Thuan bridge over the Mekong River in Vietnam will make a significant contribution to economic development in the Delta region. The bridge is located about 100km south of Ho Chi Minh City. The 1.53 km bridge, financed by Australia, Vietnam and private construction companies, is expected to be completed by 2000. The bridge will replace a ferry service that estimates reveal by 2000 will handle 8000 ton of freight and 40,000 people each day.

Thailand: early medicine helps recovery path
Article Abstract:
Australian firms have been slow to take advantage of the Thai market, but that is going to change with new opportunities of shake-downs in financial, industrial, and governmental sectors. The government is also moving to privatize state-owned and -operated enterprises. Demand in such industries as automotive supplies, housing, and information technology will remain high in Thailand.
