When the snarling's over
Article Abstract:
There are a number of disagreements between the US and Europe, such as the US view that Europe is not respecting the rules of free trade in the case of bananas, and that Europe should contribute more to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (Nato). China and Russia are likely to be a challenge to US power, and there is a need for collaboration between the US and Europe. The new partnership between the US and Europe will have a wider function than NATO had in the days of the cold war. An alliance of democracies is emerging.

At daggers drawn
Article Abstract:
There are a number of trade disputes between the US and Europe, such as a dispute on whether the European Union should allow imports of beef treated with hormones. These disputes are putting the World Trade Organization (WTO) under pressure and the WTO itself has been hit by lack of agreement on who should be its director-general. The WTO has become increasingly legalistic, while mercantilist policies have become more widespread. The WTO needs the backing of Europe and the US in order to carry out its role world wide.
