Thatcherism RIP?
Article Abstract:
The deputy leader of the United Kingdom Conservative party, Peter Lilley, has spoken out in favor of some aspects of the welfare state. Lilley also favors using market principles in the supply of some state services. There is a risk that he could compromise some of the message of former prime minister, Margaret Thatcher, that there should be a sceptical view on state spending, and that there should not be deference toward lobbies of producers and professional elites. Lilley argues that education and healthcare professionals have specialist knowledge which can be useful.

The lady is for turning: health-service reforms
Article Abstract:
Health secretary Virginia Bottomly has done nothing to reform a system mired in bureaucracy and inefficient spending. The system is neither centrally planned or market driven. She has not done anything decisive about merging London hospitals.
