The Clinton and Jiang show
Article Abstract:
President Bill Clinton and the Chinese president, Jiang Zemin, have carried out a public debate on TV, broadcast live in China. Clinton criticized Chinese treatment of Tibet and the killings in Tiananmen Square of June 1989. Jiang argues that stability was achieved from firm action in 1989. These issues have not been publicly debated in China before, and the new openness reflects improved relations between the US and China. There is also more openness in Chinese politics, and students are less radical than they were in 1989.

Don't need a weatherman
Article Abstract:
An opposition grouping has developed in China called the Chinese Democratic Party, the first such grouping to oppose communist rule. Party members have been detained in November 1998, and new cells are being set up in China with the help of new technology such as e-mails. There are a number of anniversaries of political events in China in 1999, and these anniversaries tend to have political significance. The government may have decided to make an early move against the opposition for this reason.
