The number of dessert fast food chains in Germany has increased from 164 in 1993 to 255 in 1997, an increase of 55.5%. The dessert fast food sector in the country is generally encompasses ice cream chains such as Janny's Eis and Haagen Dazs. Janny's Eis, which is owned by the Scholler group of Germany, dominates the local fast food desserts sector, with more than 150 outlets in 1997. Recession and increasing competition from the retail sector has inhibited the expansion of the fast food desserts sector in the country.

The number of pizza fast food outlets in Germany has increased by twice as much, from 261 in 1993 to 565 in 1997. Italian-style pizza continues to dominate the local pizza fast food sector, but US-style deep-pan pizzas are gaining popular acceptance among German consumers. The local pizza fast food market is currently dominated by Pizza Hut, with over 120 outlets in Germany in 1997. Other leading pizza fast food chains in the country includes Joey's Pizza, Hallo Pizza, and Call a Pizza.

Hamburger chains has increased dramatically in Germany reaching a total number of 1,050 outlets in 1997, an increase of 428 outlets since 1993. The growth is largely accounted to the expansion of leading US-style hamburger chains into eastern Germany in the first half of the 1990s. McDonald's continues to dominate the local hamburger fast food chain sector, opening its 111th burger fast food outlet in east Germany at the end of 1996.
