Political turmoil in Poland threatens to curtail economic reforms just as the economy is benefiting from the changes. Plans to privatise 600 large firms and 4,000 smaller ones could be stopped, because Pres Lech Walesa suspended parliament until elections in Sep, 1993, when the group cast a vote of no-confidence.

The economies of the former Soviet bloc in Central and Eastern Europe may be poised for recovery in 1993. The best-performing economy is in Czechoslovakia, where inflation is under 10% and unemployment is low. The Polish and Hungarian economies also appear strong.
