New Labour's discussion of Britain's continuing economic crisis is ludicrous. Britain's labor relations were at their lowest eb when Margaret Thatcher was elected prime minister in 1979. Her Tory government promoted competition by smashing the unions and privatizing national industries.

Britain's economy under the 17-year reign of the Tories was not nearly as poor as the Labor Party wants the public to believe. Economic growth in all industrialized countries has slowed since the mid-1970s, and Britain's slowdown has been among the most mild.
