The bank merger splurge
Article Abstract:
There has been a trend toward mergers of large banks world wide, and this has moved from the US in 1998 to Japan, Germany and France in 1999. Banks are affected by technological change and globailization. They are under pressure to cut costs. Mergers can reduce competition from abroad, and damage consumers' interests, and large banks may not offer more safety than smaller banks. There may also be fewer benefits from mergers for the banks themselves in terms of increasing their profitability.

Cancel Christmas
Article Abstract:
Mexicans face price increases linked to a rise in petroleum prices, and the congressional deputies face dealing with budget negotiations and the bank bail-out over Christmas. A new body will be set up to replace Fobaproa, which had rescued Mexico's banks, and the central bank governor should be on the board of this new body. Critics argue that the governor, Guillermo Ortiz, should not be on the new body's board due to his role in the bail-out.
