The battle of the bulge bracket
Article Abstract:
Deutsche Bank is to acquire Bankers Trust subject to approval from board meetings. Deutsche Bank aims to boost return on equity, and has to diversify to do this. There is intense competition in the German banking industry due to the large number of banks, leaving very thin margins for corporate loans. Bankers Trust was affected by the financial crisis of summer 1998, especially its emerging markets business. Deutsche Bank is weak in mergers and acquisitions, but Bankers Trust may not remedy this deficiency. There could also be problems if Deutsche Bank sought to integrate Bankers Trust into a wider structure.
