The bionic tomato

The Food and Drug Administration has decided that genetically altered tomatoes are safe and can be marketed without special labeling. Higher crop yields of disease-resistant, rot-resistant perishables could benefit farmers, and makers of chemical fertilizers and pesticides have been acquiring seed distribution companies in the hope of offsetting potential lost revenues.

No clear policy has yet been developed by the FDA to deal with the new array of pharmaceutical products that treat cosmetic and not medical conditions. Companies are angling to get these products classified so they can avoid stringent testing.
