The chill factor
Article Abstract:
The print industry in Switzerland and Austria expects a more competitive market in terms of advertising from the broadcasting industry. The newspaper industry in Austria has taken advantage of advertising through the Internet considering the large percentage of educated citizens in the population. In Switzerland, the print industry expects a slower growth due to the competition brought by the launch of several new local channels. However, the industries in both countries believe that growth in the television industry will remain weak by comparison.

New Lebanese President Emile Lahoud and his information minister promised to undertake reforms to promote the growth of the country's media industry. Lahoud said he would ensure that freedom of speech is practiced during his six-year tenure even if criticisms are directed against him. Market spotlight: Canada
Article Abstract:
Canada's television broadcasting industry faces ownership issues, while the magazine publishing industry has seen little changes in terms of circulation. Baton Broadcast System in 1998 acquired majority control of the CTV network, while Shaw Communications and Canwest Global Communication are planning to jointly purchase media group WIC Communications. On the newspaper publishing side, the biggest story in 1998 was the bidding war for the Toronto Sun, a battle that was won by Quebecor.
