Rebels of the Alliance of Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Congo-Zaire, supported by Uganda and Rwanda, now control a large section of eastern Zaire. The corrupt Zairean military is lead by the weak and ailing Pres. Mobutu Sese Seko, who may be ousted, setting off a social catastrophe.

Article Abstract:
Zaire's mining industry could provide substantial wealth for the country under the presumed next leader Laurent Kabila. However, outside capital and technology will be needed to exploit the mineral resources, and Kabila promises to return control of the land and its resources to the people.

The diamond city: Zaire
Article Abstract:
The city of Mbuji-Mayi fears not the impending takeover by rebels but the presence of defending government soldiers, who could loot the city before fleeing. The city would welcome the rebels, who have not pillared other cities but instead have set up effective administrations.
