The daunting hurdles: Ramos faces tough economic choices
Article Abstract:
Reviving the Philippine economy is one of the biggest challenges facing Pres Fidel V. Ramos. He is expected to follow his campaign promise of improving the lives of the more than 70% of the Filipino population living below the poverty line. He is also expected to solve the country's power shortage. At the same time, Ramos has to satisfy the requirements of international creditors and donors to narrow down the budget deficit, continue the economic liberalization policies begun by the Aquino administration and defeat the motions for a debt cap to the country's $26 billion foreign debt.

Ramos' opportunity
Article Abstract:
The Philippines is on the verge of economic recovery. The new administration of Pres Fidel V. Ramos is blessed with several economic pluses: a financing arrangement whereby foreign debt would be converted to bonds and debt buy-backs, growth in the GDP and lower inflation rate. These positive aspects are, however, minor if compared to those achieved by neighboring Asian countries. Ramos needs the full support of Congress to achieve his goals.
