The demands of boom and bust: the UK's stop-go economy mans that the construction industry can never hope to do more than 'muddle through'
Article Abstract:
During the 1980s construction boom there was a shortage of building trades and labour skills in the UK, and there was a influx of labour from overseas. This overheating of the building industry was followed by the worst recession to affect the construction industry from which it is only just emerging. Similar circumstances arise in the approach to the millennium, with the rush to complete major millennium projects leading to an influx of labour from the continent. The Further Education Funding Council is investigating anticipated building and retailing labour requirements throughout Greater London to help anticipate future problems of supply and demand in training needs.

Where does legal responsibility lie?
Article Abstract:
Litigation over a construction project in which a subcontractor was pursued for damages following the collapse of the roof on an architect-designed headquarters building shows that such cases can have serious consequences for architects. The canopy of the building had been constructed incorrectly, despite the correct arrangement being illustrated within the architect's drawing, and the roof was demolished in a gale. In litigation, the subcontractor alleged that the mistake was due to the architect's poor supervision, but the case collapsed.
