The desulphurised power station Melnik I
Article Abstract:
Energotrans (Czech Republic), power equipment operator, is trying to decrease the emissions of harmful substances. That is why the firm ensured the desulphurising of the thermal power station Melnik I (Melnik, Czech Republic), which supplies 1,250 GWh of electric power per year and 7,000 GJ of heat per year to Prague and Melnik, both in the Czech Republic. The power station burns about 2 mil t of brown coal per year. The installation of the power station's desulphurising equipment was started in 1996 and was completed in December 1998. The main supplier of the technology was ABB Umwelttechnik (Butzbach, Germany), which participated in the project with ABB Energeticke systemy (Brno, Czech Republic) and ABB DIZ (Brno, Czech Republic) including subsuppliers from mainly the Czech Republic. The total costs on the project were 1.45 bil Kc. Accessory investments in the project were 300 mil Kc. The power station's sulphur dioxide emissions decreased to 5,900 t per year and its dust emissions to 740 t per year after the commissioning of the equipment compared to nearly 34,000 t per year and 4,000 t per year in 1996, respectively.

Nova Hut keeps its promises
Article Abstract:
Nova hut (Ostrava, Czech Republic), metallurgy firm, completed its environmental projects in 1998. One of the firm's last projects was the desulphurising of coking gas and the removal of ammonia from the gas. The company invested more than 800 mil Kc in equipment from a foreign manufacturer for the purpose. Sulphur from the equipment will be taken mainly by the pulp manufacturer Biocel (Paskov, Czech Republic). The equipment is not burdened with side-line products or waste and liquidates ammonia. Another important project is an investment of 0.5 bil Kc in the dedusting of the third of four tandem furnaces at the firm's steel plant. The dedusting of the fourth furnace will be realised at the beginning of 2000.
