The eligible engineer
Article Abstract:
Rolls Royce Chmn Lord Tombs hopes to challenge the dominant presence of the two leading American aircraft engine makers, General Electric Aircraft Engines (GE) and Pratt and Whitney, by entering into a long-term strategic alliance with SNECMA of France. However, the possibility of an alliance with SNECMA is considered doubtful given the French company's close working relationship with GE. Tombs believes that Rolls Royce PLC's future hinges on strategic cooperation with other European companies and has led the company into partnership agreements with Bayerische Motoren Werken AG, Volvo AB, and Europea Microfusione Aerospaziali. SNECMA, however, remains Tomb's preferred partner for Rolls Royce as it is Europe's only other comparable aircraft engine maker.

A runway success
Article Abstract:
Janis Kong has worked for the British Airports Authority for 24 years and is now the managing director of London Gatwick airport. The airport has only one runway but had 24 million customers and made 74 million pounds sterling profit in 1996. It deals with three times as many holiday makers as business travellers which makes the peak holiday periods very difficult to organise, but Kong recognises that if she can respond to demand and ensures she is providing the service the customers want, then the airport will be successful. She also recruits the best staff she can.
