The gold-tinted potion loses froth
Article Abstract:
Czech Republic: According to a gross estimate, all Czech breweries should see a total loss of 1.8-2 bil Kc in 1999. Their loss amounted to 711 mil Kc in 1997. The loss doubled in 1998. There are 52 breweries in operation in the Czech Republic in 1999 compared to more than 70 breweries in 1989. More than 15 breweries are before bankruptcy. The poor economic results of breweries are a consequences of a bad market estimate, which resulted in the installation of surplus capacities, and a price war among breweries. According to an estimate of the Czech Association of Breweries and Malt Plants, the production capacities of breweries are 4-5 mil hl higher than demand on the domestic and foreign market. Power consumption in Czech breweries is 1.5-2 times higher compared to competitor breweries in Europe. According to experts, less than 40 breweries including Plzensky Prazdroj (Plzen, Czech Republic), Budejovicky Budvar (Ceske Budejovice, Czech Republic), Bernard (Czech Republic) and the local breweries Pivovar Krakonos (Trutnov, Czech Republic) and Mestansky pivovar Policka (Policka, Czech Republic) have a chance to survive under the current conditions on the market.
