The growing power of non-executives
Article Abstract:
The number of non-executive company directors is increasing and their role is changing. A 1998 survey revealed that non-executive directors form the majority of most boards, and that their number has increased by 10% in five years to 67%. Non-executive directors often act as advisers during specific periods of company activity. They will be people with proven management abilities, and they may be appointed through a specialist recruitment agency. Sterling strains at the leash
Article Abstract:
Manufacturing exporters in the UK are being negatively affected by the strength of the pound. However, some economists now believe that a strong pound will be a permanent feature of the UK economy. They argue that the pound has merely regained its strength, and that exporters have been going through a period of artificially favourable conditions. If the pound remains strong, then exporters will have to find other ways of ensuring that they are competitive in foreign markets.

Are you being served?
Article Abstract:
UK companies are beginning to place more emphasis on customer service, following many years during which service had a strong element of shame. The new emphasis on customer service is reflected in the fact that 42 companies and organizations have joined together to create the Institute of Customer Service. This organization will offer training programmes and qualifications, and aims to create a more professional atmosphere among frontline customer service staff.
