The impact of IT on management
Article Abstract:
One in five managers use a computer work-station regularly in 1990, and 65% of all managers are projected to use information technology (IT) by 1995. Trends in IT that will offer executives freedom from the present constraints of their business technology include: PC screens that show what paper-producing hardware will produce, allowing the prevention of unnecessary printing, and display color video images of high quality; talking screens that allow cost-effective voice response, systems that will recognize and respond to a limited vocabulary; and just-in-time(JIT)-led information technology, information systems based on JIT that will allow managers to monitor business performance and eliminate wasteful practices.

Koor industries: Israel's conglomerate restructured
Article Abstract:
Koor Industries Ltd of Israel has announced a major reorganization program in response to pressure from lender banks who are concerned about Koor's losses. Koor had a loss of $100 million in 1986 and $188 million in 1987. The reorganization features a concentration on four central areas of metals, food processing, chemicals, and electronics. Twenty subsidiaries have been closed, sold or reduced in size. The 'turnaround' plan also features a 25% reduction in senior management and an increase in individual worker productivity by 56%.

The human factor in IT: man and machine
Article Abstract:
The reduction in the workforce associated with additional automation in a manufacturing environment increases the importance of the workforce that remains. It is critical that the remaining workforce becomes integrated into the whole organization. Companies can optimize new information-intensive manufacturing systems by: convincing middle managers of the benefits of automation; encouraging on-the-job training; and altering compensation methods to support new manufacturing systems.
