The long arm of the celestial repairman
Article Abstract:
Mending spacecraft in space is no easy task, and there have been a number of achievements in this field. One such achievement is the repair of the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) which is operated by NASA and the European Space Agency as a joint project. SOHO ceased to communicate in Jun 1998 but should be fully operational at the end of Oct 1998. Space probes may become more reliable which should reduce the need for such efforts but they may also hit unexpected and new problems.

Are they too clever by half?
Article Abstract:
The usage of smart weapons by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in Yugoslavia has been hampered by the desire not to lose aircraft or kill civilians, and the constraints on laser-guided missiles that cannot be used when conditions are smoky or cloudy. Weapons using the US Global Positioning System (GPS) have performed well, but there not enough of them. There is also uncertainty as to the location of Serbian troops and armored vehicles in Kosovo, Yugoslavia.
