The other government in Bangladesh
Article Abstract:
Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) carry weight in Bangladesh where they work mainly in agriculture, health, education and the provision of credit in villages. Some Bangladeshis are concerned that NGOs lack accountability, are funded from abroad and represent a parallel state. Poverty affects a smaller proportion of the population than at the start of the 1990s, partly due to the provision of small loans, and also because NGOs often focus on women. fertility rates have dropped and are expected to fall further. Mullahs oppose NGOs, as do many politicians.
