The power and the vote
Article Abstract:
Presidential elections are scheduled for April in Algeria, having been delayed by the president, Liamine Zeroual, from Feb 1999. Algerians see the army as deciding the elections. The only officially declared candidate is Abdelaziz Bouteflika, previously foreign minister, though other candidates may come forward. There are rumors that Bouteflika has some military support. The official view is that the army is not concerned with deciding who will be president in Algeria in the 1999 elections.
