The price of prudence
Article Abstract:
China's recovery from the 1997 financial crisis may be faster than that of Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand. Beijing has maintained a stable currency policy, although that may produce only a short-term economic stimulus. Foreign investors selling to China may be affected by regulations that require government registration for all debts older than 90 days. China will need to balance the needs for regulatory control and commercial flexibility.

Still waiting for a law
Article Abstract:
China regulates equity and debt markets, investment management, and convertible bonds, but did not regulate securities nationally as of 1998. The domestic corporate bond market is essentially undeveloped, and the strict controls on foreign debt remain. However, the Asian financial crisis and the introduction of some financial innovations may encourage regulation of securities.
