A note of fear
Article Abstract:
Major record companies are concerned about pirated recordings made using the internet, and the scale of the problem is so great that they have to act. Private recordings are also a problem. The retail market averages 60% world wide and is some 80% in Scandinavia and 20% in Hong Kong. Digital technology can allow musical artists to make their own recordings and sell them over the Internet. Musical tastes are fragmenting and this creates problems for major labels which invest heavily in promoting acts, since major stars have ceased to be as popular as they were.

The big five hit the web
Article Abstract:
Record companies are concerned about piracy of recorded music through the Internet, and this is often carried out in order to protest against record companies, with artists also involved. Artists do not like the control exercised by record companies. The main five record companies have set up the Secure Digital Music Initiative, bringing together firms involved in hadware, software and content. The aim is to establish a new standard to prevent piracy.
